What is the Tesla Solar Roof?
We all know that rooftop solar panels are a great way to generate free electricity from the sun. But there are still many hurdles to overcome before all roofs are equipped with solar panels. An important barrier is the appearance of these solar panels.
But Tesla’s solar roof wants to end that. Tesla Solar Roof Tiles simply replace traditional roof tiles. Each tile is actually a mini solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity. By using specially damped but very hard glass, the view is similar to that of a normal tile. In addition, according to Tesla, solar roof tiles are up to three times stronger than normal roof tiles.
How does Tesla’s solar roof work?
The cells in each solar tile convert sunlight into electricity. This electricity then rolls back your electricity meter, to the extent that everything is clear. But Tesla recommends installing the Powerwall when ordering a solar roof. It is a battery in which all the electricity generated during the day can be stored.
Sometimes when you need power around the house, like in the evening or at night (or even during a power outage), you just get it from the Powerwall.
Only the second generation of Powerwall can be used with the Tesla Solar Roof. The Powerwall 2 can store up to 13.5 kWh, with a continuous output of 5 kW and a peak output of 7 kW.
Not all shingles need to generate electricity. Consider, for example, the slope of the roof in the north. That’s why, in addition to solar roof tiles, Tesla also offers regular glass roof tiles that look the same from the street. Elon Musk estimates that an average roof will consist of 40 percent solar tiles.
Tesla also offers an energy guarantee, but it’s unclear what the percentage return will be after several years. The various tests also need to be translated into a European context. In the US, Tesla already offers a warranty equal to at least the life of the home.
3 How much does Tesla’s solar roof cost?
