What is a Solar Optimizer?

In this article, we will introduce you to DC power optimizers . Power optimizers allow maximum electricity generation for solar panels on difficult rooftops.

What is a Solar Optimizer?

If you have partial shade conditions or need to install multiple sun orientations , power optimizers can be a smart choice and may be a better fit for your needs than microinverters. Although microinverters solve the same roof shading and orientation problems as power optimizers, they are more expensive to install.

There are several advantages and disadvantages of power optimizers to consider. We will see them all below.

How do solar panel optimizers work?

With the growing interest in solar energy, in Spain and in the world there are more and more advances in solar technology, including solar panel optimizers.

Free of nasty greenhouse gas emissions like coal and gas, solar power is quickly becoming a star among energy sources given its completely renewable nature. Harnessing only the sun, solar energy is undoubtedly becoming the energy resource of the future.

We will talk about solar panel optimizers. We will answer all your burning questions: what are solar panel optimizers? How do they work? How can I benefit from optimization? We’ve done the research, so you don’t have to!

How do power optimizers work to improve efficiency?

Power optimizers are DC/DC converters that, once installed on solar panels, turn the module into a “smart module”. The optimizers take the DC power, regulate the output of the module, and deliver the power to the central  inverter for the final conversion of usable DC to AC power.

Optimizers increase the total power production of the PV array by constantly monitoring the maximum power point (MPPT) of each individual module in your system . The modules’ MPPT tracking increases the efficiency of DC power from the solar cell to the central inverter, where that power is converted into usable AC power.

In addition, power optimizers allow you to monitor the performance of each module in your system through the monitoring platform for quick and easy troubleshooting and maintenance.

In short, optimizers mitigate module mismatch losses that can be caused by manufacturing tolerance, partial shadowing, degradation, etc.

Are power optimizers easy to install?

Yes, installing the optimizers can be done quickly and easily. Additionally, power optimizers can be installed in any orientation, making them highly versatile. They must be installed close enough to each other so that their cables can connect.

Be sure to account for heat dissipation, we recommend a clearance of at least 1″ between the power optimizer and other surfaces. The maximum and minimum length of the strings varies depending on the power optimizer, the inverter and the size of your system.

Monitoring allows obtaining data on the technical and financial performance of one or more facilities. This feature is beneficial to both installers and homeowners as it gives them deeper insight into their system.

Monitoring systems allow information on past and present performance to be obtained at the module level, and is intuitive and easy to use.

What is solar panel optimization?

Solar Panel Optimization, also known as Panel Level Optimization (PLO) , is an additional feature that can be added to your solar panel installation.

It is a unique module that is added to each solar panel and serves to optimize the energy production of each of the solar panels individually.

Most solar panel systems are connected in what are called “strings.” Each chain will have several panels connected in a set. In this set, if one of your solar panels is not performing at its optimum capacity, the other panels will only perform at the level of your most powerful panel.

This may be because one of your panels may be under a large tree, or it may not be as clean as the others due to dirt and debris. Since your string of panels is only as strong as its weakest link, having a panel shaded, in turn, restricts the current traveling through the assembly, ultimately leading to decreased power output.

For example, if a string of panels has one panel running at 60% capacity, the other panels in the string will also run at 60%. This is where the Solar Panel Optimizer comes in handy.

A solar panel optimizer is a device that can be added to one or all of the panels in a string. The main objective of the optimizer is to increase the overall performance of the solar installation, avoiding the panel that does not work at its full capacity. This allows your system to perform at its full potential regardless of a shaded panel, resulting in the best energy production for you and your home.

Are there disadvantages to using power optimizers?

Both string inverter systems with power optimizers and microinverter systems will cost more on initial investment, largely due to the additional materials they require.

If you have a south facing roof with no shade, the additional upfront cost may not be worth it in the end. In this case, installers can choose to use a string inverter that does not require additional components. Remember that power optimizers have a better chance of outlasting the inverter.
